Phonemic Awareness is taught through two main resources: 1) a Nursery Rhymes unit that was written at Chets Creek and 2) the county issued Michael Heggerty's Phonemic Awareness
The Nursery Rhymes are meant to be taught daily one-nursery-rhyme-a-week as the Warm Up activity for the Shared Reading, as described at the end of Lucy Calkins" "We Are Readers, Unit 1."
Michael Heggerty's Curriculum is meant to be used as part of the Skills Block or as an intervention for students who are struggling with phonemic awareness.

The activities below are meant to supplement the original unit, "Nursery Rimes/ Skills-Phonemic Awareness" which is available on the school's closed K-1 Assessment wiki. While the goal of this unit is to teach phonemic awareness skills early in the year with words that are familiar to the children, from Nursery Rhymes, there is also an emphasis on tying the Nursery Rhymes to comprehension such as retelling that is also being explored in "Star Books" (also called "Old Favorites") at this same time. Below are some resources to support the retelling of the Nursery Rhymes.


Jack and Jill
  • a cover page for a Nursery rhyme booklet and one sheet with the rhyme and colored picture (also includes other rhymes)
  • rhyme with black and white illustration
  • another idea for a Nursery rhyme booklet is to have the rhyme typed on the top half of each page and on the bottom, invite students to illustrate the rhyme. This will show their comprehension of the "story." Before students begin illustrating, list the things that they should have in their picture. For instance, they should have Jack, Jill, a hill, pail. After students have completed their drawings, the individual things can be labeled. This can be done for each rhyme.
  • a rebusversion of the rhyme that would be good to send home, to use as a shared reading, or to put in a Nursery Rhyme booklet for independent reading time

Humpty Dumpty
  • a cover page for a Nursery rhyme booklet and one sheet with the rhyme and colored picture

  • Use this original poem that can be illustrated on a flannel board with 5 different colored ovals that are cut into two pieces or students can cut their own oval eggs from construction paper, cut them in half , place them in an envelope with the poem written on a label sticker for the front to demonstrate for family Since this unit is about phonemic awareness, encourage the student to identify the rhyming words. After students have practiced the poem, stop expectantly before the rhyming word each time and invite the students to fill in the word together.

  • Activity for making a mobile but the pictures can also be used to act out the poem. On seperate pieces of tag board paste, cat, cow, moon, dog, dish, and spoon. Laminate and put string on so child can put the string over his head so that it hangs around his neck. Line the characters up. The cat pretends to fiddle. The cow jumps over the moon (which is balled up on the floor). The dog laughs and the dish and spoon hold hands and pretend to run off.

  • quiltsketch.jpgUse this picture on a full size sheet and have students cut it apart and put it back together again in sequence or use just the numbers or just the pictures to sequence in a pocket chart or use the pictures to make cards for each number and picture, give out to students, let them put themselves in order and hold up their card as the class says their part of the rhyme.

Nursery Rhyme Celebration Day
  • Invite each child to dress up as their favorite Nursery rhyme character.
  • Give each child or pair of children a book with a nursery rhyme collection. Call out a nursery rhyme and each team gets a point that can find that rhyme in their collection.
  • Rime-Bingo game that reinforces the nursery rhymes and the phonological awareness skills that are the goal of this unit. The directions for the Bingo are at the bottom of the file.
